Property & living overseas

You have made the decision to buy a home abroad. This means you fall into one of four broad groups:

  1. You are buying a new holiday home exclusively for your own use.
  2. You are buying a new holiday home to use and to rent out.
  3. You are doing 1 or 2 above, and planning to move permanently to your new home.
  4. You are buying a new home to move immediately.

We understand that this is a very exciting time for you, and that the last thing you want to hear about or think about is tax. We can provide you with a painless review of your personal circumstances to ensure that if necessary you can plan and arrange your affairs to avoid the potential pitfalls that can arise. We can provide or advise you on:

  1. A full tax review in relation to the acquisition of the new property covering income, inheritance and capital gains tax planning.
  2. Estate review in relation to wills covering both the UK and the new country(ies).
  3. Full review and planning in relation to expatriation from the UK and becoming non-resident.
  4. Preparation of all necessary submissions and returns to HMRC to achieve the above.
  5. Full service review regarding living and working abroad, living abroad and commuting back to the UK to work, or retiring abroad.

We have worked with expats in Spain for approximately 15 years, and have clients in most EU countries, as well as a UK practice. We are very much aware of the traps to be avoided in acquiring property abroad, and also in moving permanently to the property to become resident in a new country.

Your initial consultation which can be either be by telephone call to Gary Killmister or Chris Gillie on + 44 1434 601133 or e-mail to gary@citrustees.com, and is free.

We supply you with a questionnaire designed to provide us with the information we need to fully assess your requirements and proceed. On receipt of your questionnaire, we will provide you with a quote of our fees and charges. Once these are agreed with, we will issue you with a formal letter of engagement which sets out our professional obligations to you.

Other services

We have a long standing association with a trust group with offices in Mauritius and Switzerland. In appropriate cases, we can recommend and introduce clients for the establishment of non-resident trusts for inheritance tax and pension planning.

If you are retired or are about to retire, and have a private pension plan, we can assist you with a QROPS in your planning process, which is potentially of benefit to all persons removing abroad and becoming non-resident to the UK.

A QROPS is a Qualifying Recognized Overseas Pension Scheme. In brief, this is a provision whereby HMRC authorize overseas pension schemes and permit the transfer of UK personal pensions where the persons concerned are non-resident. They have a number of advantages over leaving schemes in the UK.
